Red River Floodway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Specimens

The selenite balls from the Red River Floodway near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada have been around for awhile, normally in very limited quantities.  This year we have seen a recent discovery add clusters of all sizes to an eager mineral market.  These clusters must rank as one of the most aesthetic forms for this common mineral.  They are gemmy and certainly displayable no matter what their size.  Most are composed of a central ball of smaller crystals with one or more larger blades which radiate from that nucleus.  The larger blades are usually swallow-tail twins.  Small examples of these specimens are inexpensive while the larger pieces are often very costly.  I only choose those having no damage so there are seldom any which I can purchase for resale.  They often probe for these in the clay with a wire coat hanger!  Any wonder they almost always have an ugly dig or two on their surfaces?  You will find these to be the finest of what was available this year at the Tucson Mineral Show.  Almost all of these specimens have small amounts of clay still adhering to them so further cleaning would improve these already aesthetic display pieces.
