Mineral Specimens For Sale From the Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa

Calcite as a species was common at Tsumeb.  Many varieties exist but they were seldom preserved.  The minors would normally avoid recovering calcite specimens due to their lack of value at the time.  To chance being fired for removing calcite from the mines was a risk they seldom were willing to take.

OKM-980   Calcite with Dolomite casts     Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Namibia.  Ex. Harold L. Dibble collection.  This 7 x 5 x 5 cm calcite cluster is dominated by a rhomb (the largest) measuring 2.7 cm on edge.  The clear calcites have overgrown brow, I assume hematite stained, dolomite casts.  Excellent condition with only a very little scuffing on the edge on a smaller crystal.  Most of the white spots wiped off after the pics were taken.  A quality Tsumeb specimen.  $300

OKN-981

OKN-981    Calcite on Smithsonite with Dioptase and Duftite?      Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Namibia.  Ex. Harold L. Dibble collection.  A nice domical piece with clear to milky calcite rhombs coating a matrix of grayish green smithsonite and what appears to be duftite.  The specimen is 9.3 x 7.1 x 6 cm.  The tiny green crystals on the calcites are very small, gemmy dioptase crystals.  Damage is evident along the edges from contact and present (but minor) on the body of the specimen.  Not a bad specimen!  Well priced at   $400

Base

OKM-885      Calcite     Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Namibia.  Ex. Harold L. Dibble collection.  This is the nicest Tsumeb calcite in the collection.  Nice and large, showy with crystals stacked up high and in parallel growth, mottramite inclusions and coatings in areas, and simple wonderful aesthetics.  13.3 x 10 x 9.1 cm.  Rhombs are modified, not cleaved, only one tiny cleave of a couple millimeters found with magnification.  It displays as damage free from any view and all views are nice.  High luster!  Nice piece of impressive quality.  $750

OKL-215

OKL-215    Calcite    Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia.  Ex. Thomas Fowler collection.  A really neat calcite grouping formed from parallel growth concentric rings of rhobs to 1.1 cm each on edge.  Even the base shows the stalactitic like concentric rings that resulted in what we see here.  11.6 x 7.7 x 5 cm.  One crystal shows a cleave otherwise the specimen is clean, even the edges.   Very nice quality.  $350

Back

OKH-746     Calcite       Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.  This calcite cluster is intermixed with matrix and shows many fine, colored/ transparent, tabular crystals of calcite to 3.5 cm in diameter.  It measures 8.8 x 8 x 3.7 cm and stands on edge for display (although I donít think this position is fully stable).  Attractive from all views, damage free and only one area of edge contact.  Exceptional condition and aesthetics for this material.  $395

OKL-447

OKL-447      Mottramite and Calcite     Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.  A 7 x 4.3 x 4 cm specimen with clear calcites heavily included and coated by mottramite.  The calcites are in well-formed rhoms in excess of 2 cm each.  The medium green mottramite is in blooms and stalactitic (pseudomorphs after?) like columns all over the specimen.  It looks rough but the condition is actually very good with only a few scrapes being present, even when closely inspected with magnification.  Fully crystallized on every side.  Displays great from any direction.  $300

OKL-448       Calcite     Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.  An absolutely beautiful, water clear grouping of tabular calcites to 2.8 cm each forming this 6.8 x 6.8 x 3.5 cm cluster.  It is on a dark matrix and more three dimensional than it might appear in the photographs.  It is an exceptional calcite for Tsumeb.  Remember, the calcites were seldom collected by the miners who often felt they were worth too little to risk getting fired for.  Today specimens of this quality are very rare.  This one is of the highest quality with only a couple micro chips near the edges.  The edges are not even broken but composed of fully formed damage free crystals.  Simply outstanding.  Expensive for a calcite yet inexpensive for a rare Tsumeb calcite of this form and quality.  $400

OKH-750     Calcite and Duftite    Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G.
