April 2015 Update

Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, 2013

An opening approximately 10 feet above the road’s surface had been known for decades... what was not known was there was a 20 foot solution cavity in the marble directly behind it!  The vug contained hundreds of stalactititic and dendritic clusters of white barite.  Individual crystals are small, up to a centimeter, but the groupings are aesthetic.  Specimens to tens of pounds were discovered in the mud covering the floor of the cavity with the most attractive being in the miniature to small cabinet size ranges.  I acquired several hundred and the remainder are being donated to the New York State Museum.  This small grouping of six specimens was held back and is now offered for the first time.  Others can be seen here   Rock Island Road Cut Specimens Page, however the very best I have offered for sale are to be seen below.  This occurrence is documented in an article for Mineral News by Dr. Steve Chamberlain.

OKL-873

OKL-873      Barite casts after Anhydrite    Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  This one is a beautiful coliform stalactite measuring 4.9 cm long ( 4.9 x 2 x 1.3 cm).  It is a barite cast after anhydrite given the tabular form of the individual divergent crystals.  All the anhydrite casts seem to have this general appearance, this one is just more aesthetic and more heavily overgrown than most from the location.  The first pic shows this characteristic best.  This is the first one of these ever offered for sale.  All the others have been kept in my collection or are in the New York State Museum collection.  There were maybe fifteen or so in total from the find.  $195

OKL-875      Barite Stalactite    Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  A beautiful arching stalactite measuring 6.1 x 3.3 x 1.4 cm.  It is extremely intricate branching in several directions at its termination. The luster is excellent and the aesthetics simply beautiful.  This fine damage free specimen is as beautiful as these specimens get.  $130

OKL-877

OKL-877      Barite on Calcite      Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  Here is an uncommon find with barite overgrowing a calcite crystal and showing differential (heavier or secondary growth) on the calcite edges.  All sides except the very base, a contact with the wall rock, are coated by barite crystals.  Both interesting and attractive.  The piece measures 4.5 x 3.8 x 3.1 cm.  No damage.  Nice!   $140

Backside terminations (very minor chipping)

Frontside close-up...clean, without any damage.

OKL-878      Barite Stalactites     Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  This 8 x 4 x 3.3 cm grouping is composed of intergrown stalactites.  Almost too intricate and complex for description, I am hopeful that the image will do a good job of showing this piece's complexity.  Front side is clean and a little chipping on back.  With most of those being damaged (remember this was a collapsed pocket so almost all the specimens recovered were damaged) the overall condition is excellent.  $200

OKL-904      Barite Stalactite     Rock Island Road Cut, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, collected 2013.  This is another rare specimen with blue crystals of barite.  The coloration on this one is light, as they always are.  Approximately one in fifty specimens from this pocket will have any blue in its makeup.  Of those most are damaged (remember this was a collapsed pocket so almost all the specimens recovered were damaged).  This fan shaped stalactite is 5.5 x 4.4 x 2.4 cm.  There are two flattened halves that are damage free, heavy and attractive.    $220

OKI-409

OKI-409     Apophyllite on Prehnite     Southbury, Connecticut.  Ex. Anthony Dunn collection.  The specimen seen here is a floater, less one very thin area of contact.  The contact is right by my thumb in the second image.  5.2 x 4 x 3.1 cm.  Great miniature for this locality.  The snow white apophyllites are nice for luster and form.  A good east coast or New England piece.  $70

OKG-020

OKG-020    Prehnite on Calcite Scepter      Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Hematite stained and green balls of prenite girdle the stem of this scepter.  The calcite is actually quite clear but the surface frosting and modifications make seeing into it difficult.  A few select faces are clear.  This one measures 6.7 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm.  Two very tiny touch marks are not distracting (could be oiled to hide).  $200

OKI-745

OKI-745   Chalcopyrite on Calcite and Quartz        Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Hematite stained and included calcites and quartz crystals make up this fine 9.4 x 5.2 x 4 cm piece.  This is basically one ling double terminated calcite of great complexity with a second calcite at one termination.  Several brassy chalcos to about 3 millimeters each.  Minor base contact, some minor healed surface area.  No damage.  The calcite is actually quite clear but the surface frosting and modifications make seeing into it difficult.  A few select faces are clear.  Fantastic example... fantastic quality, higher luster than the images indicate although most surfaces would be described as having a satin like luster, some are glassy.  $900

OKG-096

OKI-745   Calcite and Quartz        Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Beta form quartz crystals in small groups spread out over the entire surface of this specimen.  It measures 7.3 x 4.5 x 1.7.  The first generation quartz (and calcite) is yellow from hematite while the second generation, the larger clumps of crystals , are gray.  There is a rare butterfly twin lying on edge.. seen in lower left of first image.  Zero damage.  An unusual specimen for this location.  $285

OKL-132

OKL-132    Fluorite, Cerussite, Sphalerite    Trumbull, Connecticut.  Ex. Thomas Fowler collection.  Two cubes a green and a blue on a matrix coated by tiny cerussites and sphalerite.  7 x 4.4 x 2.1 cm with each cube being approx. .9 cm on edge.  The green cube had one side growing against matrix.  All corners on blue cube are not fully formed, I do not believe they are damaged.  Even the non-exposed corners show this same development.  A really good quality specimen for the location.  $175

Michael Walter collection.  A 7.5 x 6.x x 3.6 cm.  Large diopside in the center and some feldspars are nice.  Crystals on edges show damage.  A very good example for this location.  Probably the nicest I could find in several visits involving some really serious work.  $80
