February 2015 Update

OKL-672

OKL-672     Plumboan Calcite on Tarnowitzite     Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia, South West Africa.  Ex. Thomas G. Fowler collection.  The specimen seen here is 6.2 x 4.2 x 1.5 cm.  The tarnowitzite crystals (a variety of aragonite) are not large but they are beautifully formed and attractively displayed with small, well-formed transparent to translucent rhombs, may of which are interlocking in a line, of honey colored plumboan calcite (SEM/EDX verified, Jan. 2014).  The only damage is where a crystal of an unknown species, probably cerussite, was once attached and is not entirely removed… that is the white patch on the display face.  Still a desirable example.  Green mineral is your guess, I have no idea.  An uncommon classic!  $250

A very fine example with cubes of excellent luster and other minerals including anhydrite, clear sphalerite, and what appears to be barite and hexagonite. Only one small spot of damage near one edge and of course, along the broken edges where removed. Excellent condition overall. $275

OKG-208     Calcite (Twinned on 0112)      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. An especially rare form of twin for the location, or anywhere. Great clarity with only minor inclusions, minor pyrite crystal inclusions and base shows one crystal contact and lots of small casts in the calcite from forming on anhydrite. Very interesting. VERY minor termination bruising I could not notice until I used a loupe on it. 2.9 x 1.8 x 1.3 cm. $195

OKG-133    Calcite and Quartz Stalactite      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. 8.1 x 2 x 2 cm with double terminated calcite crystals to 2 cm each. Lots of interesting color variation due to hematite inclusions and staining. Several very tiny touch marks (don’t forget they blast here) that do not distract from the overall appearance. OKG-064

OKG-064    Hematite on Calcite      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. A very translucent single crystal of interesting and somewhat unique form. I don’t remember any other crystals from here being quite so elongated. Lots of sharp hematite balls on every side with very few nearest the termination. Several steps to this complex termination (not cleaved). Only damage is a tiny attached crystal near the base being cleaved. Really displays as undamaged. Great luster. 9.6 x 3.5 x 3.2 cm. $295

OKL-170

OKL-170    Quartz and Calcite with quartz casts after Anhydrite      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. Single and double terminated crystals form this dome of almost all quartz with minor hematite. Minor calcite is what forms the first layer of crystals on the matrix. One large 4 plus cm quartz cast after anhydrite is embedded amongst the quartz and not immediately obvious. No damage. Matrix is crystallized and cast after two bubbles. High luster. Top quality. 7.5 x 6.7 x 4.2 with quartz points to 2 cm. $350

A couple very tiny bruises don’t distract from the aesthetics and complexity of this unique specimen. 3.8 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm. Impressive piece. $395
