Montrose Rock Dump Specimens

OKI-668

OKI-670    Fluorite      Excavation for Feeder Canal, Queenston-Chippewa Power Plant, (Montrose Rock Dump), Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection, Harry Maines Collector, 1985.  This excavation into the Lockport Dolostone resulted in a small number of fine specimens being produced in the mid-1980s.  Until now, I have never seen one for sale.  Field collectors tended to keep all their finds.  With the latest purchase from Steve’s collection nine of these specimens came into my possession.  With the exception of the unique calcites the material is almost indistinguishable from the specimens from the Penfield and Walworth quarries (also, in the Lockport formation).  To say this material is rare is the understatement of the decade!  This specimen is a miniature measuring 7 x 4.5 x 4.1 cm.  It is part of a small vug with two compound fluorite cubes to 2.8 cm on edge.  The large one has a small chatter mark on one edge otherwise the specimen is damage free.  There is moderate internal fracturing in the largest crystal with the smaller of the pair being gemmy and exceedingly clear.  They both have a very light blue tint.  A fine display worthy specimen….likely the finest I have from the site.  350$

OKI-671    Fluorite and Sphalerite      Excavation for Feeder Canal, Queenston-Chippewa Power Plant, (Montrose Rock Dump), Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection, Harry Maines Collector, 1984. This specimen is a cabinet sized piece measuring 8 x 6.5 x 6.3 cm.  It is half of a small vug with several clear fluorites, to 1.2 cm each, clustered together on one edge.  Numerous other very tiny fluorites and gemmy sphalerites dot other areas of the opening as well.  There are some minor hydrocarbon coatings, which of course, could be removed easily.  The piece sits upright on a sawn base.  The back is sawn off, too.  Great views from front and side.  Crystals are damage free and easy to view.  Small vug with fluorites also on one side of this specimen.  Very nice piece.  195$

OKI-672    Fluorite and Sphalerite      Excavation for Feeder Canal, Queenston-Chippewa Power Plant, (Montrose Rock Dump), Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. This specimen is a cabinet sized piece measuring 9.6 x 8.5 x 4.5 cm overall.  Sawn base and small section of back sawn off.  Numerous fluorites to 2.2 cm on edge each fill the opening.  Two colors present, blue and clear.  A fine display of crystals on a thin druze of dolomite crystals.  Small gemmy sphalerites, as well. Two biggest crystals have damage (corner cleaves, one each) which are noticeable and greatly reduce the price on this specimen.  Still, all in all, an important specimen which draws attention.  195$
