Wulfentite, Mimetite and Calcite For Sale

Level 6, San Juan Poniente Vein,

Mina La Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico

Over the late 2007 and 2008 collecting seasons some of these fine specimens were trickling out of Mexico and showing up in the inventories of some of the “big” dealers…at some amazingly big prices.  At the 2009 Tucson Show two wholesalers had supplies of the same material available for sale.  One had quite a bit of the material but almost all was damaged.  The second dealer had far less and I found none which were damage free.  As you will see from the specific descriptions and images there are several crystal forms among the wulfenites.  They have nice translucent and some are almost transparent.  The mimetites are consistently a deep green color, botryoidal and silky in their surface texture.  The calcite is a minor species and usually white in color adding a nice contrast to the color mix in some specimens.  The crystals of wulfenite are seldom over a cm each but the overall size of the specimens available varied greatly.  They are an attractive butterscotch color, slightly striated and of outstanding luster for the species.  If I had wanted to spend thousands an get specimens a foot across I could have.  The problem is that the crystals were still the same size so I saw no point in anyone doing this unless they intended to cut up the specimens into many smaller pieces.

These are priced to move and the best of the many flats I purchased.  Enjoy.

OKP-374

OKP-374      Wulfenite     Mapimi, Durango, Mexico.  Ex. Carolyn Les collection.  This specimen is very unusual in color for this prolific location.  It measures 7.2 x 4.5 x 2.9 cm.  It sits nicely on edge as shown in the first image and is free of damage.  The only place the typical butterscotch coloration, common to the locality, shows is on the very edges and the back of the specimen.  $60

OKP-321

OKP-321     Wulfenite and Mimetite      Mapimi, Durango, Mexico.  Ex. Carolyn Les Collection.  This is a very fine example of this material.  It shows two generations of tabular wulfenites.  One generation is brown and the second, with the larger crystals, is transparent and yellow.  The mimetite is apple green.  So, obviously, there is lots of color in this piece.  There is also a fair amount of white, transparent to translucent, calcite scattered throughout.  The specimen is quite large for the location measuring 8.5 x 5.5 x 4.7 cm.  It views from all sides and is in excellent condition.  Exceptional specimen.  The specimen does not come with a base (the base is obviously incorrect).   $1,600

OKK-783

OKK-783     Wulfenite     Level 6, San Juan Poniente Vein, Mina La Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico.  Beautifully formed, blocky, crystals reminiscent of the Los Lamentos material.  The entire specimen measures 8 x 6.3 x 5 cm and has beautiful butterscotch colored crystals to 1.3 cm each.  The luster of the crystals varies but most big ones near top and on display face are high in luster.  Very attractive display piece that is crystallized on all sides.  These are readily available now and are likely to be future classics at prices no one will like.  One should seriously consider getting a few of these now.  $140
