Mineral Specimens from Dundas, Ontario, Canada For Sale

       Celestine and Strontianite

The Dundas Quarry ( a.k.a. as the North Quarry and many other previous names, owned by LaFarge Corporation) West Flambourogh Township, Wentworth County, Ontario has a long working history and has produced many fine specimen.  Curious however, is that specimens from this prolific locality are seldom seen for sale.  Although usually small, the specimens include aesthetic Celestine, strontianite, sphalerite, calcite, fluorite, gypsum, and other species of minerals.

FIGURED SPECIMEN

OKK-661       Sphalerite      Dundas Quarry, Ontario, Canada.   Ex. Michael Walter collection, prev. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection, prev. Dr. George Robinson collection.  Figured Specimen, Rocks and Minerals Magazine, 69:193, Fig. #6.  I will provide a copy of the article with the purchase of this specimen.  This thumbnail sized piece (2.9 x 1.5 x 2.5 cm) was obviously figured to show the nice translucence of some of these sphalerites.  No damage, good form but not an important specimen for the locale.  It is however an excellent TN for the site should sell almost instantly.  Sawn base.  $160 (this is less than I paid for it long ago).  $160

OKK-660       Sphalerite and Marcasite       Dundas Quarry, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Michael Walter collection, prev. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection.  Collected by Jimmy Dee, 1975.  Figured Specimen, Rocks and Minerals Magazine, 69:193, Fig. #5.  I will provide a copy of the article with the purchase of this specimen.  This is the finest miniature of this material I have owned and among the three or maybe four best I have ever seen (and I've seen most including the best displays of top private collections of this quarry's goodies).  The piece is a floater shard of dolostone matrix with translucent sphalerites to 1.7 cm each in two distinct groups.  4.5 x 4 x 2.2 cm overall.  The color of the sphalerites is somewhat better than it appears in the images.  Zero damage or attachments.  The marcasites add a nice aesthetic touch.  $520

OKH-989

OKH-989     Sphalerite     Dundas Quarry, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Paul and Dawne Dunning Collection.  This specimen is very impressive, looking far larger than the thumbnail sized specimen that it is (2.8 x 2.5 x 2).  An amazing, lustrous, complex sphalerite sits in the middle of this small plate of dolostone.  It is approximately 2.1 cm in diameter and splays out in all directions.  It is fantastic from any angle and has no damage, contacts of blemishes of any type.  The crystal is translucent and has a patina that gives it a highly iridescent appearance.  Wow!!!  If you’ve seen many of these from this quarry you will understand immediately why this one is important.   Mounted in a perky box.  $150

OKI-383

OKI-383    Celestine    Dundas Quarry, Dundas, Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain Collection.  This exceptional 4.8 cm crystal sits on a matrix of crystallized calcite and celestine.  The specimen measures 5.5 x 4.5 x 2.4 cm overall and sits well on edge for display.  The crystal is singly terminated, lustrous, translucent and perfectly balanced on the matrix.  The crystal is one of the best I have seen from this location.  245$

OKI-380

OKI-380    Sphalerite    Dundas Quarry, Dundas, Hamilton, Wentworth Co., Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain Collection.  Beautifully formed, exceptionally high luster crystals of sphalerite are lodged among shards of gray dolomite matrix.  The piece measures 5.4 x 4.5 x 3 cm and has crystals to approximately 1 cm each.  They are exceedingly sharp!  Damage free with only a small area of contact.  This is an exceptional sphalerite specimen for this quarry.  Better than most that I have seen in displays over the years.   A killer.  195$

OKI-185

OKI- 185    Celestine    Dundas Quarry, Dundas, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection.  Collected in 1986 this specimen is basically a floater with only the tiniest of contacts on its base.  The color is a normal light blue and the piece is translucent and gemmy in areas.  The size and quality are exceptional for the locale.  Good celestines that display this nicely, have no damage, high luster and good form are rather uncommon for Dundas.  This one fits into the category of being exceptional.  No damage and it stands on end for display.  Great piece.  225$

OKI-056

OKI-056     Celestine and Strontianite    Dundas, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection.  This nice blue translucent bladed Celestine crystal has white balls of what I presume is strontianite covering the majority of its surfaces on both sides of the specimen.  Strontianite balls can also be seen as inclusions in the gemmy blue celestine.  It measures 2.8 x 2.4 x 1 cm and is very showy.  With magnification a couple of balls can be seen to be missing, otherwise damage free.  20$

OKI-065

OKI-065     Sphalerite      Dundas Quarry, Dundas, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection.  A spectacular grouping of sphalerite crystals sitting way up on a small piece of limestone matrix.  High luster, very translucent crystals of a slightly bladed form create this diverging spray on the gray matrix.  Individual crystals to over a cm.  This damage free piece measures 2.6 x 2 x 2 cm overall and is mounted in a perky box.  Zero damage!  A very displayable example which is one of the nicest TN specimens I have seen from this active locale.  80$
