OKL-189

OKG-208     Calcite (Twinned on 0112)      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. An especially rare form of twin for the location, or anywhere. Great clarity with only minor inclusions, minor pyrite crystal inclusions and base shows one crystal contact and lots of small casts in the calcite from forming on anhydrite. Very interesting. VERY minor termination bruising I could not notice until I used a loupe on it. 2.9 x 1.8 x 1.3 cm. $195

OKG-133

OKG-133    Calcite and Quartz Stalactite      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. 8.1 x 2 x 2 cm with double terminated calcite crystals to 2 cm each. Lots of interesting color variation due to hematite inclusions and staining. Several very tiny touch marks (don’t forget they blast here) that do not distract from the overall appearance. A really attractive, displayable stalactite for this price. $250

OKG-064

OKG-064    Hematite on Calcite      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. A very translucent single crystal of interesting and somewhat unique form. I don’t remember any other crystals from here being quite so elongated. Lots of sharp hematite balls on every side with very few nearest the termination. Several steps to this complex termination (not cleaved). Only damage is a tiny attached crystal near the base being cleaved. Really displays as undamaged. Great luster. 9.6 x 3.5 x 3.2 cm. $295

OKL-170

OKL-170    Quartz and Calcite with quartz casts after Anhydrite      Roncari Quarry Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford, Connecticut. Single and double terminated crystals form this dome of almost all quartz with minor hematite. Minor calcite is what forms the first layer of crystals on the matrix. One large 4 plus cm quartz cast after anhydrite is embedded amongst the quartz and not immediately obvious. No damage. Matrix is crystallized and cast after two bubbles. High luster. Top quality. 7.5 x 6.7 x 4.2 with quartz points to 2 cm. $350

OKI-530

OKI- 530       Calcite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Very unusual form to this crystal which could be the result of its once being against another crystal that is now completely gone.  Odd for sure.  The calcite is attached to a piece of stalactite.  2.5 x 2.5 x 1.9 cm piece with the primary crystal measuring 1.9 cm.  25$

RON-001

Backside showing open cast

RON-001    Quartz Cast after Anhydrite with Hematite and Chlorite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  This specimen is a partial quartz cast encrustation pseudomorph.  This material is atypical of the usual mineral assemblages found at the Roncari and vastly superior to material which has been recovered prior to 2002.  The entire front and edges of the tabular anhydrite crystal were coated by alpine quality quartz crystals and minor red hematite and green chlorite while the backside remained open.  The back allows a great view of the original anhydrite form.  Very high luster, no damage and superb form.  Large casts like this one, measuring 5.6 x 3.5 x 1.2 cm are not at all common.  It is also unusual to see these without damage because they were recovered from a collapsed pocket in a quarry which actively blasts.  I believe these specimens will soon be considered a modern day east coast classic.  Aesthetic and reasonably priced at… 125$

RON-002

RON-002    Quartz and Calcite with minor Goethite and Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  This fine specimen is composed of a large calcite on beautifully formed alpine quality quartz.  This material is atypical of the usual mineral assemblages found at the Roncari and vastly superior to material which has been recovered prior to 2002.  Red hematite staining adds contrast and better shows the complexity of these fine calcites.  The calcite exhibits nice luster and is very translucent.  A few brownish black goethite pseudos after hematite which are only a few millimeters each.  This specimen measures 6.1 x 4 x 3 cm overall with the primary calcite crystal measuring 3.8 cm.  Very nice 125$

RON-003

RON-003     Quartz on Calcite with Goethite and Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  A fine matrix specimen consisting of bet form quartz crystals with minor red hematite staining on a druze of white calcite.  The quartz is exceptional with fine crystals to 1.4 cm in diameter each.  They are clear in much of their bodies and get milky with depth.  There are balls and rosettes of hematite which look to be altered (pseudomorphed) to a reddish brown goethite.  This variety of quartz is uncommon and the example sown here is exceptionally fine for the quarry.  No damage make this piece even more unusual.  200$

RON-004

RON-004     Quartz with minor Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Aesthetic, alpine quality quartz with minor hematite staining on matrix.  The specimen measures 6 x 4.7 x 3.4 cm overall with crystals to 2 cm each.  No damage.  The hematite adds just enough contrast to better view the exceptional form of these quartz crystals.  Fine example.  65$

RON-005

Back

RON-005     Quartz (Amethyst) with Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Amethyst is very rare here and even though it is light in color, it is amethyst.  This damage free specimen is a plate of crystals which are forming a cast after some previous mineral in botyoidal form.  High luster and measures 6 x 5.5 x 2 cm.  90$

RON-006

Back

Calcite close up (back)

Quartz close up (front)

RON-006     Quartz and Calcite with minor Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  From the front this plate of crystals is almost all quartz and from the back it is mostly calcite.  The specimen is a floater save one edge contact and it measures 6 x 5 x 2.2 cm.  The quartz reach 2.3 cm each and the calcites .4 cm.  Tiny red hematite balls scattered about on the quartz add some character.  Zero damage.  60$

RON-008

RON-008    Phantom Calcite on Quartz, hematite and Stilpnomelane    Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  An unusual piece in that the yellow matrix balls and coatings and phantoms within the calcites are the mineral stilpnomelane.  8.7 x 6 x 3.8 overall.  Sits nicely for display and exhibits no damage.  A nice example of this uncommon mineral.  80$

RON-009

A better look at the phantoms

RON-009     Quartz and Calcite with minor Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  This fine specimen is composed of a large calcite on beautifully formed alpine quality quartz.  This material is atypical of the usual mineral assemblages found at the Roncari and vastly superior to material which has been recovered prior to 2002.  Red hematite staining adds contrast and better shows the complexity of this fine calcite.  The calcite exhibits high luster and is very translucent (transparent in regions).  This specimen measures 6.1 x 4 x 3.2 cm overall.  Hematite is isolate to select areas on only some of the faces.  Very attractive and better in hand.   135$

RON-010

RON-010      Hematite coated Quartz on Stipnomeline    Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Five single and double terminated quartz points are clustered together on a bed of gold colored stipnomeline in this fine miniature.  The piece measures 4.5 x 3.4 x 2.1 cm and is quite attractive given the red color of the crystals and light color of the background.  Aesthetic and damage free.  60$

RON-011

RON-011     Quartz and Calcite with minor Hematite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut.  Nice gemmy clear calcites to 2 cm each form a dense coating on this matrix.  The calcites show selective face coatings by red and gray hematite creating an attractive visual effect for this small cabinet sized specimen.  It measures 6.1 x 5.5 x 2.7 cm and has no damage.  A fine piece.  110$

OKI-662

OKI-662    Quartz on Calcite      Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  These two crystals, to 3.7 cm each form a “V” on a matrix coated by small white to clear calcites.  The pieces measures 6 x 4.8 x 3 cm overall.  The quartz are unusual for the locality, having an unusual growth feature on all the prism faces.  It is almost like a stepped overgrowth of a second generation of quartz in epixaty.  The overgrowth is milky and the terminations are clear.  There is a tiny “Wilbur” on one termination.  A very displayable piece which is the only one like it of which I am aware.  275$

OKI-660

OKI-660    Quartz on Calcite    Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  Beautiful gemmy quartz to 2.8 cm each sit up high off the surface of this domical plate of calcites.  The crystals are well formed and both single and double terminated.  There is a moderate amount of hematite in small red balls as inclusions and as coatings on the quartz and calcite.  Damage free, which is quite unusual for this material.  This is a big plate measuring 11.5 x 11 x 5.5 cm.  It sits on edge nicely for display.  Flashy!  225$
