Herkimer Diamond Mineral Specimens

St. Johnsville Quarry, New York

An impressive cluster of Herkimer diamond crystals from St. Johnsville Quarry, New York.    An impressive cluster of Herkimer diamond crystals from Fonda, New York.

St. Johnsville has a quarry managed by Hanson Aggregates.  The Herks from this location are similar to others from the region.  The Herkimer diamonds are well formed and often attached to matrix.  Pyrite bars are a rare association with the Herks and scepters are also encountered here.  The location is not open for collecting.  Specimens are difficult to get.  Most of these fine pieces come from two private collections built during the late 1990s.

OKF-585    Calcite on Dolomite    Hanson Quarry, St. Johnsville, New York.  Ex. James Cranston collection.  A fine miniature which sports a large parallel growth group of translucent to transparent crystals of the typical yellow color for the locale.  They have moderate to heavy inclusions of marcasite on the backside.  All views are good so backside may be a poor way of saying this as any side displays so well.  Minor edge and base contact which is expected and all display faces are clean.  4.6 x 3 x 3 cm.  Great luster and a fine specimen.   90$
