December 2010 Update

The following specimens from Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut are the ones discussed in Joe Polityka's recent Springfield Show review in The Mineralogical Record, Nov.- Dec. 2010, p. 547.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed photographing and describing them.

OKH-362

OKH-362    Quartz Stalactite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  This well formed stalactite measures 6 x 5 x 3.8 cm.  The quartz are lustrous and clean.  It stands on end nicely for display and offers good views from any side.  Backside has a scrapped area at its base otherwise damage free.  Attractive and unusually nice for the locale.  50$

OKH-363

Base

OKH-363    Quartz and Calcite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic cabinet specimen measuring 9.5 x 6.7 x 4.2 cm.  Double dome of single terminated quartz crystals to over 2 cm each on calcite.  The quartz is gemmy and have minor hematite inclusions/ staining.  Several quartz are missing and one calcite is cleaved.  Specimen has crystallization on base as well.  Views nicely from any direction.  All in all, a good specimen which displays well but has been priced low due to the damage.  90$

OKH-364

Base with anhydrite casts

OKH-364    Quartz, Calcite and Stipnomeline on Quartz casts after Anhydrite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic small cabinet specimen measuring 8 x 5.4 x 3 cm.  Lots going on in the paragenesis of this specimen.  Casts are visible from base while the top view shows calcites to 2 cm each with quartz crystals.  Stipnomeline fills in between some of the primary crystals.  Breakage to one big calcite on edge from specimen extraction (as would be expected), otherwise clean.  85$

OKH-365

Back

OKH-365    Calcite on Quartz casts after Anhydrite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic miniature measuring 4.2 x 3 x 1.9 cm.  There are two nicely formed, double terminated calcites on the surface of the cast, to 1.9 cm each.  Backside of piece is totally open and better shows the extent of the mineral replacement that will make this type of cast from Roncari a modern day classic.  These seem to be the most desired specimens from this new find.  This one is an excellent example.  80$

OKH-366

OKH-366    Quartz      Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic small cabinet specimen measuring 8.2 x 5 x 4.2 cm with crystals to 2.5 cm each.  Great views from three sides on this dome shaped specimen.  Minor chalcopyrites and hematite in tiny balls add a nice contrast.  Some base crystallization.  Minor blasting damage: one missing point and a few very tiny tip dings.  Nothing to draw your attention other than the great aesthetics of this exceptional piece.  225$

RAI-004

RAI-004    Quartz and Chalcopyrite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic small cabinet specimen measuring 7.8 x 5.5 x 3.5 cm with crystals to 2.6 cm each.  Great views from three sides on this dome shaped specimen.  Chalcopyrite crystals and hematite in tiny balls add a nice contrast.  Some base crystallization.  One small quartz point missing makes this an unusually clean piece.  Great example of this attractive, exceptionally nice Roncari material.  260$

OKH-368

OKH-368    Quartz and Hematite      Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic small cabinet specimen measuring 6.7 x 5 x 3.5 cm.  One side of this specimen has a nice coating of beta-habit quartz crystals which are sprinkled with tiny gold/ silver colored hematite blades.  One crystal near edge has minor tip damage otherwise in outstanding condition.  Really nice example and price.  45$

OKH-369

OKH-369    Quartz and Calcite       Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  This miniature shows complex calcites to 2 cm each among glassy clear, alpine quality quartz crystals.  No damage.  Very attractive piece from any angle.  If you like aesthetic miniatures, this would be hard to beat.  60$

RAI-001

RAI-001    Calcite on Quartz casts after Anhydrite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  These hematite coated quartz are actually a cast after an anhydrite crystal.  WOW!  Not only that, the calcites to come next are unusual in form and have these wild looking selective face coatings/ phantoms.  Together they create a fine visual display.  5.5 x 5 x 4.1 cm overall.  No damage to piece.  I’ll let the images describe the complexity of this assemblage.  Great piece.  200$

RAI-002

RAI-002    Calcite and Quartz Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  This small cabinet specimen is dominated by a large double terminated calcite measuring over 5 cm.  It is amazingly complex and outstanding example of what I believe are the most important calcites from any east coast locality to be found in decades.  Great satin to glassy luster (dependant on which face you scrutinize).  Selective hematite stains and phantoms.  Oh my!  The quartz are also great on this damage free specimen.  Fine views from all sides.  6 x 4.8 x 4 cm overall.  Sits well on its matrix base.  I'm thrilled to be offering this fine specimen.   375$

RAI-003

RAI-003     Quartz, Calcite and altered Chalcopyrite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic cabinet specimen measuring 10 x  8 x 6.2 cm.  The piece is a shallow dome of quartz, to 2 cm each, on calcite (most of which shows from what I would describe as the back of the piece).  Numerous chalcos alterd to brown goethite? And plenty of hematite ball is browns and reds to add excellent contrast.  There is a very minor tip ding and two small quartz points missing among the sea of crystals.  An excellent quality specimen for Roncari.  250$

RAI-005

RAI-005     Quartz on Calcite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  An aesthetic small cabinet specimen measuring 7.7 x 7.5 x 4 cm.  The piece is a perfect dome of calcite which is coated on one edge/ side by fabulous, glassy quartz crystals to 2.4 cm each.  One spot may be damage to a small crystal but I can’t really tell even with 10x, so I will describe this as a damage free piece (I think it is internal cracking within a crystal which I am noticing).  I’m being way over critical but so few specimens from this active quarry are damage free that I just don’t expect to see such clean specimen like this one.  350$

OKG-297

Back

OKG-297     Babingtonite and Prehnite     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  This amazing thumbnail sized piece is a single crystal of babingtonite measuring a whopping 3.3 x 2.3 x 1.7 cm.  That’s simply huge for a classic east coast babingtonite.  Minor prehnite.  Front view is super while the backside shows attachment to what was likely anhydrite or other prehnite masses.  This highly complex crystal is double terminated and stepped in its growth and twisted along its length.  Impressive.  It is the best babingtonite from this quarry of which I am aware and certainly an important piece.  1,750$

OKH-375       Calcite, Chalcopyrite, Galena and Dolomite  Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri.  This piece is composed of a chunk of dolomite matrix that has double terminated, translucent to transparent crystals to 4 cm each on all sides.  There are several contacts on crystals yet the specimen displays well and is certainly display worthy.  Its overall measurements come in at 7.4 x 6 x 5.8 cm.  My price reflects the outstanding deal I received on this fine specimen.  An American Classic that was wrote about in American Mineral Treasures, 2008, p. 66-73.  55$

OKH-376       Calcite, Chalcopyrite and Dolomite  Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri.  This piece measures 7.2 x 4.2 x 3 cm and shows off a beautiful, double terminated crystal of 5.5 cm and several smaller ones, too.  The specimen doesn’t stand upright but is damage free and only shows minor matrix to matrix contact.  The crystal are all double terminated except one which has a small matrix contact.  An American Classic that was wrote about in American Mineral Treasures, 2008, p. 66-73. 48$

OKH-373       Calcite, Chalcopyrite and Dolomite  Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri.  This piece measures 4.9 x 3.5 x 2.7 cm and shows off a beautiful, double terminated crystal.  There is a minor contact from another crystal on the base termination.  This piece is a perfect miniature in all respects:  it stands on end for display, it views wonderfully from any angle, it has sharp form and great terminations, it is a floater and has no damage what so ever.  I can’t imagine a better miniature sized calcite specimen from this mine.  An American Classic that was wrote about in American Mineral Treasures, 2008, p. 66-73.  90$

OKH-371       Calcite on Chalcopyrite   RESERVED   Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri.  This fine example is a plate of transparent crystals to 2 cm each with a mix of iridescent chalcos in various places.  Almost a floater with only one small area of edge contact.  Back is also slightly crystallized.   5 x 4 x 3.5 cm overall.  No damage.  My price reflects the outstanding deal I received on this fine specimen.  An American Classic that was wrote about in American Mineral Treasures, 2008, p. 66-73.  38$

OKH-372       Calcite, Chalcopyrite and Dolomite  Sweetwater Mine, Viburnum Trend District, Reynolds County, Missouri.  This piece is exceptional exhibiting two transparent calcites of 3.9 and 3.4 cm each.  They are double terminated and stand of the well crystallized matrix in nice relief.  The piece is much better than it appears in the images and is damage free.  It stands nicely on end for display and is a damage free floater.   5.4 x 5 x 5.3 cm overall.  Spotless!  My price reflects the outstanding deal I received on this fine specimen.  An American Classic that was wrote about in American Mineral Treasures, 2008, p. 66-73.  55$

OKH-379

Note modifications and stepped growth

OKH-379    Calcite and Dolomite on Fluorite     Mina Jaimina, Caravia, Asturias, Spain.  Fine, large, fluorite cubes to 3 cm each on edge compose this beautiful specimen.  There is minor brown dolomite and white double terminated calcites to add color and shape contrasts.  Minor sulfide inclusions in the calcites and fluorites, as well.  The nice thing about this piece is the strong tetrahexihedral form that is quite noticeable on each fluorite.  The fluorite surfaces are also highly stepped making the overall appearance quite dramatic.  Minor edge contacts and one small fluorite crystal has a minor rub.  Attractive and priced to go.  125$

Opening in base

RAI-030     Quartz on Calcite Cast     Roncari Quarry (Tilcon Quarry), East Granby, Hartford Co., Connecticut.  A unique miniature that measures 4.1 x 2 x 2 cm.  It is completely hollow implying that it is a cast after another mineral but I am unsure of what species it might be.  The opening appears to be the same shape as the cast.  Quite unusual.  Good luster, form, minor quartz.  No damage.  Tip of termination has incomplete final growth of calcite.  30$
