Grossular/ Clinopyroxene York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. This site is closed to collecting but once produced some fabulous garnets, especially in the late 1990's for a brief time. I removed the primary mineralized pod over the period of an entire summer and still have some quality pieces. These are all thumbnail specimens mounted in perky boxes. They are nothing short of fantastic. Bright orange/ red garnets in combination with dark green clinopyroxene (likely diopside). Crystals range from a few millimeters to well over 2 cm. The luster is the best you can find, the form very good and the contrasting colors make each of these superior specimens. The garnets are transparent and translucent with internal fractures and the clinos are opaque. Top shelf pieces from a location that is now a provincial park and off limit to collecting.  Be sure to out article on this site.

OKK-813

OKK-813     Grossular and Clinopyroxene    York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  Collected by Michael Walter, Summer 1999.  Location is now a Provincial Park and closed to collecting.  This crystal aggragate is actually a single crystal with others on its surface.  It measures 5.5 x 5 x 4.5 cm.  The white areas are brucite coatings.  I would describe this as having no damage and one contact on its backside.  Some areas are beautifully formed while others (those areas associated with the brucite) are somewhat morphed.  VERY large garnet for this location.  Excellent luster, translucent in areas… exceptional for one of these.  Mounted in a miniature sized perky box.  $195

OKK-951      Grossular on Clinopyroxene   York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Michael Walter collection, collected by Michael Walter, 1999.  Figured Specimen, Gems of Wisdom, Gems of Power, book by Teresa Kennedy, Marlowe and Company, New York, 2007.  6 x 6 x 4.9 cm piece with a nice large garnet sitting high on what is most likely diopside.  The 3.5 cm crystal is of nice luster and translucent to gemmy in small areas.  There is minor chipping and one sizable chip.  There are excellent views and it is a substantial crystal.  This price is very reasonable for one of these top specimens as there are very few of this size and quality.   $550

OKK-664    Grossular    York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Michael Walter Collection.  Collected by Michael Walter, 1999.  Figured Specimen, Rock and Gem Magazine, December 1999, p. 81.  Now a Provincial Park, this material is becoming uncommon to find in quality specimens and will only become more so in years to come. This must rank as one of the finest examples from the location.  I've found larger crystals an in cases of small ones, better crystals.  For a large cabinet sized or museum sized piece this one is exceptional.  No damage as it is completely etched from calcite.  White coatings are brucite.  Views great from any direction showing coarse crystallization on every side.  Garnets are to over 4 cm each.  Base and small area of one side have the contacts from matrix.  Sits flat and stable for display.  17 x 14 x 10 cm.  Impressive if you are knowledgeable about the material that has come from this location in the past.  $3,200

OKK-150

OKK-150     Grossular and Chlinopyroxene (likely diopside)    York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  Collected by Michael Walter, 1999.  Location is now a Provencal Park, collecting no longer allowed.  A fine miniature sized example with huge crystals for the location.  Normally they only reach a few millimeters in diameter but exceptional examples like this one can get much larger. This specimen is 4.8 x 4.1 x 4 cm.  The luster is good and the form , as well.  The white coatings seen in a couple places are brucite.  A few contacts but nothing major.  It would be hard to find a comparable miniature of this material in a museum or otherwise.  $190

OKJ-454

OKJ-454    Grossular and Clinopyroxene (likely Diopside)    York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  Collected by Michael Walter, 1999.  This is a top specimen from what is now a Provincial park and off limits to collectors.  The find was unusual and produced some of the finest garnets ever recovered from the site.  This would rank as an excellent example measuring 5.3 x 4 x 3.5 cm overall.  It is composed predominately of one crystal of a deep rich orange/ red color.  Stabilized.  Translucent with gemmy areas.  Can display from any side.  Zero damage.  I don’t think it is possible to find a better example for sale anywhere.  $200

OKI-166

OKI-166     Zircon      York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  This is a serious TN specimen for anyone who is knowledgeable about this region.  The site is now a Provincial park so its days of being a collecting locality are gone forever.  Noted for its garnets these zircons were always a rare find.  They were always white and opaque/ slightly translucent until I found this small seam of purple crystals in the mid 1990s.  There were approx. 20 specimens, almost all TN pieces like this one, and most have found their way to museums and important private collections.  This was the one I selected for myself because of its great form, lack of damage and aesthetics.  The crystal is complex and has numerous small riders on it.  It measures 1.7 cm and is embedded in clinopyroxene (probably diopside).  Overall it measures 2.9 x 2 x 1.9 cm.  Damage free.  An expensive TN but a value given its rarity and importance.  Any Canadian museum would be thrilled to get this specimen in their inventory and I suspect it will eventually reside in one.  750$

OKI-165

OKI-165    Grossular and Clinopyroxene   York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.  Collected by Michael Walter, 1998.  I just rediscovered this specimen….displayed at the 2004 Syracuse Rock and Mineral Show it was boxed away and neglected.  Now that I’ve found it once again I assume someone might have a place for it in their collection.  This huge TN specimen just fits in a perky box measuring in at 3.5 x 3.5 x 2.1 cm.  The largest crystal is 2.2 cm.  The biggest crystal are translucent and gemmy in small areas.  The tiny crystals are gem.  The luster is great and the color a deeper red than usual.  Most garnets form this location are more of an orange color.  The orange ones are rather dull looking while these red ones are vibrant and very aesthetic.  One small chip on the big garnet but in fine condition overall.  Views great from all directions.  The garnets are redder than the photos indicate.  Outstanding display piece.  Location is now a provincial park and will unlikely produce specimens again.  380$

OKF-574

OKF-574     Vesuvianite     York River Skarn Zone, near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada.   Collected by Michael Walter, 1996.  4 x 1.7 x 1.7 cm makest this a miniature but a tiny snip off the matrix and it becomes a nice TN.  In either case the vesivianites are very nice for the locality which is now closed.  They are a rich lustrous brown color, double terminated and stand up off the matrix for nice viewing.  The largest measures .8 cm and they rest on a matrix of grossular and clinopyroxene.  A nice damage free example for someone wanting to add a locality suite which will not be providing any further specimens.  90$
