Quartz and Other Mineral Specimens from Greely, Ontario

Quartz, dolomite, pyrite, calcite and other minerals make for spectacular specimens at the Grant Quarry near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Calcite/ Dolomite/ Pyrite/ Quartz. Grant Quarry, Greely, Ontario, Canada.   Most of these specimens are composed of two or more minerals on a matrix of massive gray dolomite. That dolomite is coated on one or more sides by pink/ white dolomite crystals to 1 cm each. Calcites are scalenohedral and rhombohedral in form, sherry colored, very lustrous and up to 2 cm each (though most are less that 1 cm). Quartz is Herkimer diamond in form and very clear. Another example of difficult to find, attractive specimens, many of which are at a low price.

OKI-014

OKI-014    Quartz, Calcite and Dolomite    RESERVED   Grant Quarry Greely, Ontario, Canada.    Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain Collection.  This piece is so busy with interesting crystals that it is difficult to take it all in at once.  The specimen measures 7 x 6.2 x 4.2 cm and is domical in shape.  It views well from all sides and has a high luster and huge contrast in textures.  The quartz crystals are gem and up to 1.3 cm each and sit within black druze quartz.  These are the Canadian Herks and if they were off the matrix, impossible to tell from their more famous U.S. cousins.  The calcites are complex in morphology and color.  A couple are damaged but overall the specimen is in good condition.  A showy addition to any collection.  100$

OKI-003

OKI-003    Quartz on Dolomite    Blair Hill Farm, Greely, Ontario, Canada.    Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain Collection.  A pair of end to end crystals in parallel growth.  The total length of the quartz is 5.8 cm.  A tiny tip ding is visible with 10x magnification otherwise clean.  6.5 x 4.5 x 3 cm.  The crystals are dark internally but clear on their surfaces.  From this locale only one in hundreds is this nice and good in condition.  Attractive, displayable piece.  150$

OKF-521

OKF-521        Quartz    Blair Hill Farm, Greely, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain Collection.  The specimens from this Canadian “Herk” occurrence rank among the best quartz specimens from anywhere in the world (yes, even better than Herkimer Co. New York!).  They are higher in luster and have a nicer smoky tint than almost any specimen of quartz.  The problem is that this occurrence has not produced many noteworthy specimens and extremely few which show no damage.  The specimens are highly skeletal and floaters although this one has two tiny matrix contacts to its base.  This one has one broken face but is otherwise clean.  It measures 5.7 x 4.4 x 3.6 cm and has a tiny carbon included stem sticking out of its base.  The price reflects the fact that there is visible damage.  90$

OKF-523        Quartz    RESERVED     Blair Hill Farm, Greely, Ontario, Canada.  Ex. Dr. Steve Chamberlain Collection.  The specimens from this Canadian “Herk” occurrence rank among the best quartz specimens from anywhere in the world (yes, even better than Herkimer Co. New York!).  They are higher in luster and have a nicer smoky tint an most any specimen of quartz.  The problem is that this occurrence has not produced many noteworthy specimens and extremely few which show no damage.  The specimens are highly skeletal and floaters although this one tiny matrix contacts to its base where the specimen number is glued on.  It measures 5.5 x 3.5 x 4 cm.  The surface growth features are very nice and it is difficult to decide how to display this specimen in that it views nicely from all directions.  300$

OKF-381

OKF-381    Quartz Scepters    Blair Hill Farm, Greely, Ontario, Canada.  Ex Dr. Steve Chamberlain collection.  Previously in the Dr. George Robinson collection.  Dr. George Robinson collected this piece in 1978.  Of the many thousands of Herkimer diamond like quartz crystals from this region that I have inspected, this is only the second that I have ever seen which exhibits a sceptered habit.  The primary pair of crystal have deep black stems which are short and were once in contact with the dolomite matrix.  The crystals have beautiful smoky tint and some internal rainbows.  The largest crystal has a tip ding but even with this the specimen is still important.  The crystal show slightly skeletal development to their surfaces yet are still well formed.  This is a fine example of Canada's version of the Herkimer diamond scepter.  $200

OKD-049

OKD-049   Quartz/ Calcite/ Pyrite/ Dolomite       RESERVED      Greeley, Ontario. Nicest calcite specimen I have seen from this location (and I’ve inspected many, may hundreds of these specimens).
