March I, 2013 Update

Tucson 2013 Specimens

OKK-785

OKK-785     Beryl    Grafton, New Hampshire.  Ex. Saums Collection.   This appears to be a pocket beryl and not simply a New England beryl crystal broken out of some pegmatite.  Excellent condition on all sides with no damage.  Very translucent with gemmy areas.  2.3 x 1.6 x 1.6 cm.  An outstanding TN sized specimen.  $195

OKK-786

OKK-786     Quartz Scepter      Treasure Mountain Mine, Fall Hill, Little Falls, New York.  Ex. Saums Collection.  This fine example is a damage free floater of moderate size and excellent form.  It measures a respectable 5 x 3.4 x 2.2 cm. The site has been closed for quite some time now and we have no indications that it will ever reopen.  As a result these fine specimens are becoming difficult to find and they are now only appearing from recycled collections.  This is an excellent mid-range specimen for both size and price.  The quality is excellent!  I do not anticipate it wanting for a new home.  $350

OKK-787

OKK-787     Topaz on Quartz and Muscovite     Shigaer Valley, Baltistan, Pakistan.  7 x 7 x 4.7 cm specimen shows a single sherry colored topaz sitting up high off a matrix of quartz and muscovite.  The topaz measures 2.2 x 2.2 x 1.9 cm.  Sawn flat on base.  No damage to primary crystals, strong edge contacts could use a bit of trimming back.  I will list this one as is for now and if not taken will trim myself and probably re-list.  A great value now at $400

OKK-788

OKK-788     Garnet with Epidote     Sadiola Hill (Sadiola Mine), Kayes Region, Mali.  This one measures 3.8 x 2.8 x 1.7 and has a sharp 1.5 cm garnet sitting high off the epidote.  This is a less common combination in an excellent quality example.  No damage, a couple minor crystal contacts.  $40

OKK-789

OKK-789     Prehnite and Epidote     Sadiola Hill (Sadiola Mine), Kayes Region, Mali.  A fine single ball of prehnite with several double terminated epidotes firmly embedded.  Very aesthetic!  3.5 x 3 x 2.5 cm.  Zero damage, floater.  $75

OKK-790

OKK-790     Prehnite and Epidote     Sadiola Hill (Sadiola Mine), Kayes Region, Mali.  A fine grouping with numerous prehnite balls and with several double terminated epidotes firmly embedded.  Very aesthetic!  4.7 x 4.3 x 2 cm.  Zero damage, floater (maybe a couple small natural crystal contacts on back).  Not a typical specimen from this location which would normally be dominated by the prehnites and would exhibit some noticeable hard contact areas.  $95

Michael R. Walter Collection, New York State Mineral Specimens

I went to specializing in St. Lawrence County, New York minerals approximately three years ago.  As a result I am beginning to dissolve my New York State collection, a few specimens at a time in each week's mineral update.  These are not specimens I am calling part of "my collection" in order to give them some form of significance, these are cataloged specimens in my collection that have been with me, generally for ten or more years.  Many are self collected or purchased directly from the miner/ field collector.  Almost all are of very good quality or represent an unusual species, crystal form, or some other characteristic making them important to the suite of specimens (based on locality) from where they came. Much of the material I sell here will be from closed but well documented  locations.

OKK-589

Close up of "pin prick" sized mark

OKK-589    Herkimer Diamond      Treasure Mountain Mine, Fall Hill, Little Falls, New York.  Ex. Michael Walter New York State collection.  Collected by Michael Walter, 2002.   This is a well developed skeletal crystal measuring 8.2 x 6 x 4 cm.  There is a strong base contact area that the piece sits on and a pin head sized prick on the termination (smaller than a millimeter in size).  Excellent skeletal crystal from this closed location.  $300

OKK-591

OKK-591    Herkimer Diamonds with Calcite, Dolomite and Pyrite         RESERVED    Benchmark Quarry, St. Johnsville, New York.  Ex. Michael Walter New York State collection.  This is an amazing piece from a now closed location.  It is a floater with no attachments or damage, excluding a very small chip on the bottom side of the big crystal.  Dolomite, pyrite and calcite in well developed crystals can be seen attached to one end of the big crystal.  Lots of pyrite inclusions.  8.4 x 7 x 5.5 cm.  I have only seen TWO SPECIMENS OF THIS TYPE from the quarry, that is with small calcites clearly growing AFTER the quartz formed.  I have viewed thousands of specimens from this occurrence over the past thirty years and rank this one and the other that came from the same pocket (that one is smaller and far less important) and exceedingly unusual, for any Herkimer diamond location.   Someone has an unusual opportunity to get a unique and important specimen at a very reasonable price.  Comes with a custom engraved acrylic base.  $750
